Summer Small Business Spotlight | Beth Wilson, Wilson Home Organizing | Heather Hurt Photography
The first thing I noticed stepping into Beth’s charming Tacoma home through her bright yellow front door was her warm and peaceful presence. In business for a little over 3 years, she is the owner of Wilson Home Organizing.
We sat down for an interview about her and her company and I walked away encouraged by her love of people and the skills she offers them. I absolutely love the story she told about her favorite day on the job. It is the perfected example of how her heart for people drives what she does.
Heather: You have 30 seconds to tell a stranger about your company… What do you say?
Beth: I help folks declutter their homes and clear out what is no longer needed, and put systems in place to maintain a tidy and calm space.
Heather: Why do you do what you do?
Beth: The reason I do what I do is because it has made such a difference in my personal life. It has made a difference on how I feel and how I work when my home feels calm and peaceful and I love being able to do that for other people
I actually love clutter. I love pictures and books and tchotchkes. At their best these things inspire us and make us happy. After all, there’s a reason that these little things have found their way into our home.
But most of us have jobs. And families. Or pets, travels, and obligations that keep us from being able to really take care of our home and separate the junk from the treasures. Ultimately we end up with a space that adds more stress rather providing relief and protection from the outside world.
The world is crazy and everybody works so much, so I’m a big believer in creating your own sanctuary where you can be creative and have the energy and headspace to do what you love and live your life rather than spending it worrying about stuff.
Heather: Tell me about your favorite day on the job
Beth: One of my favorites was the final day of a really big 3 day job. The clients were ready to let go of a lot and over those three days had gotten a ton done. You could just tell they were over the moon excited about having their master suite back. As the project came to a close they were seeing what a nice place they could have because of the work they had done together. They were being lovely dovey like teenagers, even making googly eyes, because they were so happy.
It was really special to see them have a moment together in response to having their space back. It wasn’t just the physical transformation of the room that I loved, but also seeing them be immediately so happy together as a side effect was the best.
Thats what you want, ultimately. You want the space to look good but you want them to feel good. It was such an immediate representation of that, which I don’t always get to see, which is why it was my favorite.
Heather: Would you rather visit the moon or go on an all expense paid trip anywhere on earth?
Beth: The moon sounds exciting, but I’d rather go on an all expense paid trip on earth.
Heather: Where would you go?
Beth: About 4 years ago my husband and I visited San Sebastian in Spain. We would live there if we could, I would go back there in a heartbeat.
Heather: What makes you unique?
Beth: I think the fact that I have worked with people in so many different places from a customer service standpoint and I Ive been able to transfer that really well to the work I do now.
A lot of people are nervous to have someone come to their home, but you can’t surprise me. I have been able to meet a lot of different people at a lot of different places in life. Being able to work with many different people with compassion and non judgmentally really helps me in this job.
Heather: One year from now what do you hope today’s client will say about their experience with you?
Beth: I hope they will say they have been able to live their life more easily, more stress free, and they’ve been able to be proud of their home.
Heather: Anything else you want to share with the online world?
Beth: I have loved being able to learn about tacoma through his job. It has been really lovely to explore Tacoma by visiting people in their homes. This is the only job I have had here and it has been a really lovely way to learn about the city.
I did’t know a lot about Tacoma before I moved here and we have really enjoyed it.
